About
Stage 02I've spent over two decades studying Nairobi's matatu sector — the informal minibuses that move most of the city — through more than 32 months of cumulative fieldwork. My work sits at the intersection of labor, gender, and infrastructure: who does the work of moving a city, and how that work is valued, stigmatized, or rehabilitated as technology and capital reshape it.
That long-term grounding is now the basis for a second track of work: helping companies, funders, and platforms operating in African urban mobility understand the social and labor realities beneath the technology they're deploying — before those realities become expensive surprises.

A study of the electrification of East African informal transit — matatus and electric tuk-tuks — tracing how EV adoption is driven as much by comfort, class aspiration, and foreign capital as by environmental concern, and how it is reorganizing labor into new tiers of status and stigma.
